Athlete's Foot - Natural Remedies & Treatments

Athlete's Foot is a fungal infection of the feet. Athlete's foot occurs when a certain type of fungus gets into, grows, and multiplies in the feet. It is especially fond of the area between the toes. These particular types of fungi thrive in moist, warm areas of the body. Although it is called athlete's foot, it can also occur in your hands and between the fingers as well. Athlete's foot is quite contagious. It can be passed through direct contact with an infected individual. It can also be passed through contact with things like pool and shower surfaces, socks, and shoes.

The risk of contracting athlete's foot increases if you sweat a lot, wear shoes that do not allow your feet to breathe, keep your feet wet for long periods of time, or if you have an injury around the nail area. Symptoms of athlete's foot include redness and itchiness around the affected area, flaking and peeling skin between the toes, a stinging or burning sensation, and sometimes this may be accompanied by blisters. If the fungus spreads into the nails, they can become brittle, thick, and discolored.

Of course, the best natural remedy for athlete's foot is prevention. This is possible by keeping the feet dry at all times, especially immediately after bathing or swimming. Always wear sandals in public showers or pools. Always make sure that your socks are free of moisture (change them often if necessary). And make sure you always purchase shoes that are well ventilated (especially avoid plastic-lined footwear).

Typical treatments for athlete's foot include over the counter anti-fungal powders or creams to help control the infection. If you are using this method, be sure to always keep the feet clean and dry to help speed up the healing process. If your athlete's foot remains after several weeks of this type of treatment and prevention, there may be something internal going on and it would be wise for you to consult with your healthcare professional.
