Kidney Stones - Natural Remedies & Treatments

What is a kidney stone? It is a solid mass located in the kidney that is made up of tiny crystals. It is quite possible for more than one of these "stones" to form in the kidney or ureter at the same time.  Kidney stones usually form when the urine in the individual contains too much of certain substances. The main factor in the formation of these stones is dehydration.

Kidney stones are a very common condition, and the exact cause really depends on the type of stone in the individual. The most common type are calcium stones, which tend to combine with other substances such as oxalate, carbonate, or phosphate. Other types include uric acid stones, which can occur with chemotherapy or gout. Struvite stones which usually accompany a urinary tract infection. And cystine stones which can form in people with a condition known as cystinuria.

Symptoms of kidney stones can include, but are not limited to:

- Pain in one side of the back or abdominal area

- Nausea

- Fever

- Pain in the groin area

- Blood in the urine

- Unusual urine color

Treatment of Kidney Stones

Most people are told to start drinking six to eight glasses of water everyday until they finally pass the painful stone. What they are not told is how to make simple lifestyle changes in order to prevent future occurrences.

It has been proven that water soluble fiber, such as that found in fresh fruits and vegetables, is a very good way to flush out the kidneys. And as we're told by the FDA, we should be eating 5 to 7 servings daily of fresh fruits and vegetables. Another means of prevention: avoiding drinks that include chemical sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup and aspartame. Recent research has indicated that high sugar intake can lead to the formation of kidney stones.
